I played the first installment of Dead Space last year, it was not very popular among my friends, but I happened to come across the game and gave it a try. It was a mixture of sci-fi and horror, a perfect theme for my favourite movie or books. I like horror games, mainly because lets me feel my thumping heartbeat while anticipating an unexpected event that makes me leap off my seat, literally. That is what Silent Hill and older Resident Evil games gave me, an artificial feeling of danger and thrill, and gosh the feeling of beating a game like this is satisfying.
Dead Space surpassed my all my expectation of my favourite game genre. Beautiful graphics, great plot, and it was immersive. Like watching a good horror movie without corny endings, and best of all it feels like I am in it. Dead Space was a story about a space engineer Isaac Clarke who was sent to respond to a distress signal by the USG Ishimura, the first and most famous planet-cracker from Earth. Note that planet-crackers were built around the year 2400, because by then earth resources were fully depleted, and on the verge of extinction, all humans devoted themselves the cause of planet-cracking. Little did Isaac know was the Ishimura was overrunned by alien infestation. As Isaac went deeper into the ship to look for ways to escape, he found out more secrets about the downfall of Ishimura, and escaping is proven far more harder than he thought it would be.
I can write this all day, but I doubt you would wanna read about it. Besides, if you're interested, I wouldn't spoil the game for you! The story was 5 star material, numerous plot twists, and damn the story was so deep. There were so much to tell, within a year they have numerous expansions on the story. They had movies, books, comics and even more games which tells stories of other survivors besides Isaac Clarke. I religiously followed them all, because I love the story so much. How people try to survive through a necromorph apocalypse, losing people they love, and uncover the secrets of the Marker. They tied the story so well from all the expansions in my opinion.
Finally last week, Dead Space 2 was released! I couldn't wait for the PC crack, so I bought it off EA. It wasn't an act I would regret at all because the game is absolutely epic beyond words. Still essentially Dead Space, but with more action and scary moments. This time Isaac ended up in the Sprawl after narrowly escaping Aegis 7 and Ishimura. He is now a hunted man by the Government because he became a dangerous secret by exposing himself to the events in Dead Space 1. The events in Dead Space 1 was not as simple as it seemed, and the EarthGovernment is trying to cover up their carelessness. As the story unfolds, the Sprawl is overrunned by necromorphs as well, and Isaac is partly responsible for it.
I love how Isaac has more personality now. In the first game he was the silent protagonist (reminds me of Flint in Alundra 2). Now he talks and kill necromorphs like a bad ass. He made a female friend along the way, Ellie. Armed with a plasma cutter, she is now among the ranks with Jill Valentine, Lara Croft and Lightning on my list of favourite gaming heroines. =D
It is funny to see a female body animated and not a dead corpse. Because I have a habit of stomping on every dead corpse in the game to dismantle their heads and prevent them from turning into necromorphs. xD
One of the best moments of the game in my opinion was this:
The return to the Ishimura! It feels deja-vu and scary at the same time walking through the corridors I been through in the first game. Definitely one of the best game moments in my history of gaming.
I give this game a 10/10. Best game I ever played and I am not exaggerating. Dead Space has officially became my most favourite game series, kicking Metal Gear Solid off the top. =P
