My take on elections 08

A political tsunami definitely has hit Malaysia. Bn, being the biggest political party even before independence and the pride of the nation, has finally taken the biggest beating to date. If losing the main political leaders of bn was bad, failure in capturing two-thirds in the parliament was total humiliation for bn. To add on its misery, selangor, penang, perak, kedah and kelantan have fallen into the hands of the opposition. This means the opposition will form state governments for the states effectively.

Bn’s defeat wasn’t really a surprise to all. It was built up over the last 4 years. People expected to see our current pm to do a better job after the last elections, but because of the massive number of seats they won then, they began to turn proud. And having the entire government to themselves, they can do whatever they please, and no doubt corruptions sets in. The chinese and indians were unhappy all along due to negligence from the government. The anger has brewed over the years, but the parties representing the minority races did nothing to voice out our anger. In bn, only the umno president makes decisions. He can decide whether to listen to the opinions of other component parties of bn. If the other parties went against him, the status of their parties will be threatened. And to protect their status, the component parties have no choice but to keep quiet in bn and follow whatever the bn leader says. This has absolutely raised the anger among the minority races. However, the swinging of malay votes this term caught bn by surprised. Even malays were unhappy with the government. The main reasons were that the government was too corrupted and rapid increment in the cost of living.

The change was no doubt, needed. Bn was too proud for good. We need check and balance in the government. However we cannot be too happy now because bn will not back down this easily. They will definitely give a hard time to the opposition state governments because bn still holds the main government. Approval of policies and division of funds will be hindered somehow. Just like today, some mp in penang announced that the mega projects like the rapid penang bus system and the extension of penang bridge will be halted instantly. How childish of them to retaliate after losing the state. I bet Guan Eng and dap won’t back down this easily. As to bn, it’s time to grow up!
